When you hear that low, sultry voice, with a bit of jazz and R&B mixed together, you’d never expect who that voice came from. The first few lyrics of “Darlin” put you in an almost ethereal state of mind. You just sit back, relax and let the story by told.

Jean Dawson was born David Sanders in late 1995   in San Diego. Soon he moved to Tijuana and was raised there, but still went to school in San Diego, so Dawson would have to wake up at 3 am every day just to get to school on time. Dawson’s trek started with a bus ride to the border and then he’d have to get off and wait in line to cross over to the US.  According to an interview in Spin magazine, Dawson said “It’s around three hours maybe, just waiting in line, because there’s at least a thousand people trying to cross at the same time. It’s also like 4am because everybody has to get to work by like 7 or 8. So I’m just a little kid with a backpack with my older cousins who did that way longer than I did. I did that up until middle school.” Since he had lots of time to kill on the way to school, he’d spend it listening to all different types of music, from grunge, hip hop to new wave and Spanish rock. Can you imagine doing that every day just to go to school? And so young at the same time?

This made Dawson take his education seriously. When Dawson graduated high school, he moved to LA to study film at California State University. During this time, he recorded his first album, Bad Sports, in 2019. Somehow, Rick Rubin heard and signed Dawson to his American Songs imprint. Knowing this is what he wanted for his life, Dawson decided to leave school and pursue his dream to become a musical artist. Depression runs in the family and he knew if he didn’t make this happen, if he didn’t concentrate and focus on this career, it would severely effect his mental state.

Chaos Now was released in 2022, followed by the single “No Sznz” featuring SZA which has over 15 million streams on Spotify. Dawson is currently working on his three part EP series, Boohoo, which consists of some Spanish rock, going back to his roots.
