Yesterday Cumulus announced that seven of their twenty 24/7 Westwood One syndicated formats will be shut down in thirty days. The formats that will be eliminated as of Sunday April 20th include Variety Hits Pop, Variety Hits Rock, Hits Now, Classic Hits Gold, Classic Rock X, Rock 2.0 and Good Time Oldies. Reports say that more than 40 national format on-air personalities were fired as a result.

The move will leave many radio stations, especially in small and medium markets, scrambling to find alternatives like the 24/7 formats offered by Radio Resources.

With a potential second bankruptcy looming, Cumulus has been aggressively cutting expenses, so this is unlikely to be the last cost saving measure they take. In their 2024 financial report Cumulus announced plans to reduce 43 million in annual fixed cost, only 15 million of which was cut last year. This move will fall short of the remaining 28 million in anticipated 2025 cuts.
