The first time I heard Jordan Lutes was on Tik Tok. That’s been a huge platform to discover artists you may have never paid attention to. A lot of us stick to a genre and listen to that specific radio station or streaming station, so we rarely get to experience musicians outside our music bubble. On Tik Tok, you can scroll and hear a sound you love, and badabing, you have a new artist and genre you’re into! That’s exactly what happened when I heard Jutes.
As soon as I started looking into the rap/rocker, the first thing that popped up was “Demi Lovato’s Fiance.” His music wasn’t the top theme google brought up. His relationship seemed to be more important. This made me want to know even more.
There isn’t much about his early life. There isn’t even a Wikipedia page for Jutes or Jordan Lutes (which may be a blessing in disguise since that site can have misinformation.) We do know Jordan is from Ottawa, Canada and studied film before he got into songwriting. He was also heavily into basketball. However, when he discovered music and a new passion for it, he left his studies behind and signed with Capitol Records. Two years later, Jordan left to “pursue his own independent artist goals.” Jutes said because of Covid, budgets were cut at the label and he felt he wasn’t getting the support he needed, and that’s why he left.
Jutes says playing basketball was what introduced him to hip-hop and that’s what jumpstarted his love of music. He started writing and rapping, Jutes says as a joke, but then one thing led to another and he started taking it seriously. His father was a drummer in a rock band and that added a new flavor to his sound.
In the beginning, his confidence was unmatched. According to Jordan, he’d jump on stage, even if he thought he was terrible, and knew he could take over the crowd. However, that changed when he moved to LA. He saw the immense talent around him and that got into his head which caused major anxiety. Turning to other methods to clear his head only made it worse. Jutes has been sober now since late 2021. This is something he shares with Lovato as she’s sober as well.
Jutes has a few albums out: Careful What You Wish For from 2021, LadyBug from 2023, and Sleepyhead from 2024. I’m excited to see more of his music, and less of his relationship.
